A massive wildfire has broken out in a Mongolian nature reserve, reportedly starting from a vehicle belonging to Mobicom, a subsidiary of KDDI, and burning a vast area of grassland.

As the local government indicates its intention to seek enormous compensation, former yokozuna Asashoryu (Mr. Dagvadorj) has attracted attention for his comments on social media about the incident.

Mr. Dagvadorj criticized local rhetoric and media coverage that appear to place the blame for the fire solely on the Japanese side, expressing his objection by saying that it was “wrong.”

He also raised serious questions about the silence of Mongolian members of parliament who were reportedly accompanying the group at the scene at the time. He criticized biased media coverage that portrays only the Japanese side as the villain, as well as the existence of pressure surrounding the reporting.
