Kobe to Trial School Cameras, Brushing Aside Objections

Kobe City Moves Ahead with Trial Installation of School Cameras, Rejects Opposition
Kobe City is moving forward with a plan to install security cameras on a trial basis in the hallways and stairwells of elementary and junior high schools in order to address problems on school premises, such as bullying and verbal abuse. In response, a petition calling for the cameras not to be installed was submitted by supporters of the Japanese Communist Party, but it was rejected by the City Council’s Education and Children Committee on October 20, 2026.
The Japanese Communist Party has also expressed opposition to the installation of cameras during elections.
Shouldn’t cameras be installed, as they are in Taiwan, to help prevent irregularities? There have also been people such as Katsuko Inumaru who previously raised objections to election irregularities. The cameras are apparently intended to be operated not for continuous monitoring, but so that footage can be reviewed when problems occur. As Kobe City Council member Uehata has stated, “Schools are not sanctuaries.” We believe that installing cameras is necessary as an initiative to protect children’s safety.
