One Lawmaker Left, ¥585 Million in Tax Money. 74% Say Unacceptable
A Japanese party with just one member in parliament has received five hundred eighty-five million yen of taxpayer money. The Centrist Reform Alliance crashed from one hundred sixty-seven seats to forty-nine in February's election, and was effectively dissolved in September. But it kept the party alive with one lawmaker, and on October twentieth it collected its party subsidy. The amount does not drop when members leave mid-year. With the December payment, the total is reported to reach about one point one seven billion yen. A leader of the group its former members formed says it is not something they should feel guilty about. In a Sankei and FNN poll, seventy-four percent said it was unacceptable. Meanwhile, on October twenty-eighth, three parties agreed to cut thirty-one seats from the lower house. Ishin had promised forty-five. Before cutting seats, shouldn't Japan cut party subsidies and lawmakers' pay? What do you think? Full story at Samurai Report.
