Memories of 1989 Sealed for 30 Years: British Media Reveals Unreleased Tapes of the Tiananmen Crackdown

The British independent television news organization ITN has released precious, previously unreleased footage of the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident in China. The reporting team risked their lives to smuggle the footage out of the country, where it remained sealed in an underground vault for more than 30 years. Accompanied by raw, unedited on-site audio, the footage vividly captures the moments when the military violently suppressed students calling for democracy, as well as the tense scenes of tanks moving through Beijing under martial law.

We are deeply moved by the journalists who risked their lives to record the truth while resisting pressure to erase inconvenient memories from history. Learning about the anguish and courage of students of our own generation who lost their lives in the pursuit of freedom, we strongly feel that these historical facts must never be allowed to fade from memory. We feel sorry for the Chinese people, as the Chinese Communist Party continues to conceal the truth from its own citizens.
