Taiwanese Lawmaker Faces 14-Year Prison Sentence Over JYen$800 Million in Funds from China

Taiwanese independent legislator Kao Chin Su-mei has been indicted by the Taiwan High Prosecutors Office on suspicion of receiving approximately NT$170 million from China and developing organizations in Taiwan, among other allegations. Prosecutors are seeking a 14-year prison sentence for her on charges including violations of the National Security Act and corruption.

She is alleged to have formed a team with associates between approximately 2005 and 2016, brought in funds, and made specific statements in the legislature. She appears to deny the allegations.

She seems to have made Yasukuni Shrine a target of criticism. However, Zhou Enlai, one of the founding fathers of the People's Republic of China, once visited Yasukuni Shrine.
